How to Clean and Care for a School Backpack

Regular care and cleaning help a school backpack last for years. This guide explains how to look after it correctly so it stays in excellent condition throughout many school years.

School backpack care and cleaning

Check the school backpack regularly

Check your child’s backpack regularly. Even when children already manage many things themselves, it is worth looking through every compartment from time to time, especially during the first years of school. Carry out a thorough inspection at least at the end of the school year: empty the backpack completely, check it for damage and clean it before storing it for the holidays.

Our tip: Regularly emptying the backpack also prevents your child from carrying unnecessary weight.

Prepare the backpack for cleaning

Before cleaning, empty every pocket and compartment completely. Check for leftover food, small toys or stationery. If the backpack has a removable back frame, take it out before cleaning. Loose crumbs and dust can be removed with a vacuum cleaner and a crevice tool.

Clean the inside properly

Remove crumbs and dust with a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth. Wipe the lining with a mild soapy solution. For more stubborn dirt, use a soft brush dipped in warm water with a little mild detergent.

Care for the outside

Clean the surface with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Pay special attention to seams, zips and reflective elements and treat them gently. Do not scrub printed areas. Use mild soap or a suitable textile cleaner and avoid aggressive chemicals. Soft brushes and sponges are ideal because they do not scratch the surface.

Our tip: A school backpack should be worn on both shoulders. This protects the spine and prevents one shoulder strap from being damaged by uneven loading.

Hand wash or washing machine?

Cleaning a school backpack by hand

Topgal recommends against washing school backpacks in a washing machine. Machine washing can damage the water-repellent coating, printed designs or back system. Clean the backpack by hand with water, mild soap and a soft brush.

If you nevertheless decide to machine wash it, follow these rules:

  • Remove the back frame.
  • Choose a gentle, low-temperature programme without a spin cycle.
  • Place the backpack in a mesh laundry bag.
  • Never tumble-dry the backpack.

Remove stubborn stains

Use lukewarm water and a damp cloth or sponge. A specialist textile cleaner is suitable for polyester or nylon backpacks. For stubborn stains, apply a paste of baking soda and water, leave it briefly, then rinse with clean water.

Dry the backpack correctly

Allow the cleaned backpack to air-dry thoroughly, preferably in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight and radiators, as high temperatures may damage the material and distort its shape.

Our tip: When choosing a backpack, look for ergonomics, a well-padded back and adjustable straps. It should be lightweight yet roomy enough and include reflective elements. See our school backpack comparison.

Protecting a school backpack from dirt

Prevent dirt and carry out small maintenance checks

Preventive care extends the life of the backpack:

  • Check zips and straps regularly for damage.
  • Use leakproof containers for food and drinks to prevent stains inside.
  • Reproof the backpack regularly to maintain its water resistance.
